Disclaimer

Deletionpedia is an archive of deleted Wikipedia pages.

Wikipedia allows re-use of its content, including pages it has deleted, using the GNU Free Documentation License. To comply with this license, we rescue the full edit history of pages.

What do we archive?

We archive pages which are deleted from Wikipedia, and which are no longer available on Wikipedia or its sister sites.

We don't like

We try to avoid:

  • Copyright violations.
...because we don't have any right to host the page
  • Pages with serious libel problems, or are only designed to attack others
...because it's not right to attack others
  • Pages whose full revision history is still available on Wikipedia
...or its sister sites. Sometimes we make a mistake and upload these. We would still like userfied pages, because these can easily be re-deleted.
  • Pages which set out to offend others
...having strong opinions is fine, but only being abusive is not
  • Pages which contain personal information not publicly available elsewhere
...as this can hurt the subject of the page

In these cases, we may either remove the page completely, display an older version or blank the page to only display a warning notice in the default view of the page. If you think a page should be removed, please report it.

We do like

We like interesting or quirky pages. And we are happy to hold pages which contain:

  • Inaccurate information
  • Spam or promotional content
  • Moderate amounts of vandalism
  • Creative writing, opinions and original research: all the things that Wikipedia is not.

Design goals

One of the main aims is to be completely automated. A script written in Python does all the work.

How it works

An automated script does all the work:

  • A Wikipeida user tags a page on Wikipedia as a candidate for deletion.
  • We upload all pages which have these tags to a temporary store. As of May 2008, this store holds about 10 GiB of data.
  • We check Wikipedia's deletion log, which lists pages which are deleted from Wikipedia.
  • If the page which was deleted is in our temporary store, we upload it onto the Deletionpedia wiki

What next

Apart from the usual tweaking of the filters deciding which pages get uploaded, the next major item on my list is to add some rating system to allow readers to identify interesting pages.
