IFC Mission Statement

The Independent Filmmakers Coalition (IFC) of Kansas City is a non-profit organization that promotes regional independent film, video and media production.

The IFC provides a setting for education, artistic expression, networking, and the cooperative sharing of resources to anyone with an interest in filmmaking."

Meetings

Activities

The weekly IFC meetings often include a free educational workshop or film related activity:

  • film screenings
  • lighting workshop
  • comedy writing workshop
  • Bentley workshop
  • acting workshop
  • directed reading
  • legal seminar

Some meetings are in cooperation with another group or organization.

Regular meetings

Regular meetings are open to the general public and are held at 7:30 p.m. at the Westport Coffeehouse in Westport, 4010 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO 64111. There have been requests to hold the meetings at other locations and one was held in Lawrence, Kansas in 2005. Occasionally meetings will be cancelled for weather. Near a holiday a regular meeting may be replaced with a social event or less often cancelled.

A regular meeting starts with announcements from each board member and any preapproved person.

After all announcements new attendees, "those who have never been to an IFC meeting or haven't been to one in a long time," are asked to stand and give their name and interest in film. New attendees are given a membership application. Attendees are not required to join. Each meeting provides an opportunity for attendees to make "shameless self-promotions," which is an attendee's opportunity to talk about any film-related projects.

Next if there is an activity scheduled it begins after a short break.

Socialization

Most members get to know each other by working on each others film projects and volunteering for or participating in IFC events.

IFC members and others interested in film often meet at a local bar after regular meetings.

Events

  • One Night Stand - A film contest in which participants have ten hours to make a short film using a pre-selected theme and item.
